Dartington’s Schumacher College is offering members of the local community a chance to develop skills in growing their own produce and sustainably working land for maximum benefit.

The forward-looking College, which has an international reputation for its education work in environmental and social sustainability, will host a series of one-day practical sessions from 19th to 21st July, with contributions from leading land and agricultural practitioners.

Entitled Practical Skills for Sustainable Local Food, the sessions will demonstrate sustainable agriculture in action and teach participants how to grow and harvest their own vegetables, herbs and crops.

Educator and professional gardener Dyane Osborne, who holds a degree in Environmental Education from specialist agricultural school Bicton College, leads the course. Martin Crawford, founder of the Agroforestry Research Trust, will demonstrate methods used in the Forest Garden at Dartington; Horticulturalist Nick Gooderham will show students around the pioneering School Farm; and Permaculture expert Rhamis Kent will explain how agriculture can transform urban areas for the better, using his regeneration work in Detroit as an example.

In order to get a real flavour of College life, Taster Day students also have the opportunity to engage with the community living ethos – an essential part of the Schumacher experience. In supervised morning and afternoon sessions, students can spend time in the Schumacher kitchen, playing their part in the creation of the delicious vegetarian food that the College has become famous for or in discussion forums and workshops.

The taster days take place on Monday 19th July, Tuesday 20th July and Wednesday 21st July. Each one-day session costs £75 and includes access all tuition and course materials; vegetarian lunch and refreshments; and access to the College’s Open Evening with Rhamis Kent on Tuesday 20th July.

Full information can be found at www.schumachercollege.org.uk and you can book your place by contacting Schumacher College on 01803 865934 or admin@schumachercollege.org.uk.

Whether you’re a foodie or just a food lover … Whether your tastes lean towards comfort food or haute cuisine, the POV (Point of View) series invites you to get your pots, pans, televisions, computers and friends ready for the special broadcast of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Food, Inc., on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 9 p.m. on PBS,

Emergency Catastrophe Product Organization Guidebook is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks. It is a that involves preparing for disaster before it occurs, disaster response, and supporting, and reconstruction society after natural or human prepared disasters have occurred. In all-purpose, any Crisis Catastrophe Product Management Manual is the uninterrupted process by which all individuals, groups, and communities supervise hazards in an effort to avoid or ameliorate the shock of disasters consequential from the hazards. In The event taken depend in portion on perceptions of risk of those exposed; Effective Emergency Disaster Product Organization Guidebook relies on thorough integration of emergency plans at all levels of government and non-government involvement. Activities at each level (individual, group, community) affect the new levels. It is common to place the responsibility for governmental Crisis Disaster Product Managing with the institutions for civil defense or within the conventional organize of the emergency services. In the private sector, Emergency Catastrophe Product Managing is sometimes referred to as business continuity planning.
Emergency Disaster Product Managing Handbook is one of a figure of terms which, since the end of the Cold War, have largely replaced Civil defense, whose original focus was defending civilians from military attack. Modern thinking focuses on a further general intent to protect the civilian population in times of peace as well as in times of war. An alternative current term, Civil Protection is widely used within the European Union and refers to government approved systems and resources whose task is to protect the civilian population, for the most part in the event of natural and human made disasters.
Within EU countries the term Crisis Organization emphasizes the political and security dimension rather than procedures to satisfy the immediate needs of the civilian population. An academic trend is towards using the term disaster risk decrease, particularly for Emergency Disaster Product Organization in a development organization context. This focuses on the mitigation and awareness aspects of the emergency.
Mitigation efforts attempt to prevent hazards from developing into disasters altogether, or to reduce the possessions of disasters when they occur. The mitigation phase differs from the new phases because it focuses on long term measures for reducing or eliminating risk. The implementation of mitigation strategies can be considered a portion of the recovery process if applied after a disaster occurs. Meditative measures can be structural or nonstructural. Structural measures use technological solutions, like flood levees. Nonstructural measures include legislation, land use planning and insurance. Improvement is the most cost efficient method for reducing the impact of hazards; then again it is not always suitable.

Mitigation does involve providing regulations concerning evacuation, sanctions against those who refuse to obey the regulations and communication of potential risks to the public. Some structural improvement procedures may have adverse effects on the ecosystem.

A precursor activity to the improvement is the identification of risks. Physical risk assessment refers to the process of identifying and evaluating hazards. The hazard particular risk combines together the possibility and the stage of impact of a certain hazard. The equation below states that the hazard multiplied by the populations? vulnerability to that hazard produces a risk Disaster modeling. The higher the risk, the further urgent is the hazard certain vulnerabilities are targeted by improvement and awareness efforts. then again, if there is no vulnerability there will be no risk, an volcanic activity occurring in a desert where nobody lives.
In the preparedness phase, Emergency Catastrophe Product Management develops plans of action for when the catastrophe strikes. Common preparedness measures add in:

Communication plans with easily understandable terminology and methods.

Proper maintenance and training of emergency services that including mass human resources, such as community emergency response teams.

Development and exercise of emergency population warning methods joint with emergency shelters and evacuation strategy.
Stockpiling, inventory, and maintain catastrophe supplies and equipment result organizations of trained volunteers among civilian populations. Professional crisis workers are fast overwhelmed in mass emergencies so trained; organized, dependable volunteers are extremely valuable. Organizations like Community Crisis Response Teams and the Red Cross are ready sources of trained volunteers. Its Crisis Disaster Product Management system has gotten high ratings from both California, and the Federal Emergency Catastrophe Product Managing Agency. An added aspect of awareness is casualty forecast, the study of how many deaths or injuries to be expecting for a given kind of event. This gives planners an indication of what resources have to to be in place to respond to a particular kind of event.
Crisis Catastrophe Product Managing in the arrangement phase should be flexible and all encompassing carefully recognizing the risks and exposures of their respective regions and employing unconventional and atypical means of support. Depending on the region community or private sector crisis services can quickly be depleted and heavily taxed. Nongovernmental organizations that offer desired resources, transportation of displaced homeowners to be conducted by restricted school district buses, evacuation of flood victims to be performed by common aide agreements between fire departments and rescue squads, should be recognized early in arrangement stages, and experienced with regularity.
